Website – User Experience vs. Design

POSTED ON: Friday 12, 2016

Which path would you take?

Without a nice design users may not hang around as there’s no attraction to the brand or website, so they’re likely to shop elsewhere. However if the user experience isn’t good enough, users will have a negative buying experience and may never return, which affects the reputation of the brand. On average, a person will tell 24 people about a bad customer service experience they have, whereas customers who have a good customer service experience will tell on average 17 people. It takes 12 positive experience to make up for one unresolved negative experience!! What’s best for you? Firstly, you must define what your goals are… do you want to take a lot of online orders/enquiries, or just show off your portfolio? If it’s the latter, design may edge user experience… otherwise understanding the ideal process for the user is fundamental. Amazon is the prime example of this, as you can usually buy the product you’re looking for within 3 clicks (genius!). This strategy has made them the biggest e-commerce website in the world – the actual design of the website isn’t the prettiest, but customers are left with a very positive online shopping experience, which makes them want to come back. You can have the nicest design in the world, but unless the customers experience is considered it’s not much good.

In the words of Albert Einstein “everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.”
